November 2025 Sustainability in Crochet

Sustainable Yarn Crafting

As the year draws to a close, November is the perfect time to reflect on how we can make our yarn crafting practice a little kinder to the planet. From choosing eco-friendly yarns to repurposing yarn scraps, small mindful choices can make a big difference — both for the environment and for the satisfaction we feel in creating something truly meaningful.

Choosing Eco-Friendly Yarns

One of the simplest ways to embrace sustainable yarn crafts is by selecting environmentally conscious yarns. Natural fibres, like cotton, bamboo, or wool, that are sustainably sourced or organically grown fit this bill. Many yarn brands now also offer recycled or reclaimed fibres, which give materials a second life that would otherwise go to waste.

Blends like recycled cotton are becoming increasingly popular, offering the same use and durability as traditional yarns while reducing environmental impact. If you’re not sure where to start, check out our collection of natural and sustainable yarns, including Rowan Cotton Revive, Scheepjes Catona, our Fiddlesticks Cedar and Ocean Mist range – just to name a few.

Mindful Making

Sustainability isn’t just about the materials you use, it’s also about how you use them. Planning projects thoughtfully and buying only what you need helps reduce excess. Keeping a small record of your yarn stash—noting colours and amounts—can help you use up leftovers for future projects.

Choosing timeless designs and neutral colour palettes means your handmade pieces can be loved and used for years to come. Repairing worn or damaged crochet items instead of discarding them is another simple but powerful way to extend their life while also honouring the time and care you put into your craft.

Stash Busting & Repurposing

We all have those bits of yarn left over from past projects, so why not turn them into something new? Leftover bits of yarn are perfect for scrappy blankets, coasters, face scrubbies, or colourful baskets. You can even combine similar-weight yarns to create unique marled effects or combine different thicknesses for thicker textures for homewares and accessories.

Repurposing old projects or unworn garments can also be incredibly satisfying. Try frogging (unravelling) pieces you no longer use and reusing the yarn for something new. It’s a great way to reduce waste and breathe fresh life into forgotten creations. (Check out our Tip of the Month for the best way to do this!)  I’ve also known people to buy up yarny garments from op shops with the purpose of unravelling them to make something else.

And of course items from your stash are great for creating squares, mandalas or embellishments to upcycle something else in your wardrobe.  See our tip on Upcycling 101 for more great ideas and how to do this.

Sustainable Tools & Habits

Sustainable yarn crafts can also extend to the tools you use. Invest in quality hooks, needles and accessories, made from materials like bamboo or wood, which are durable, comfortable, and biodegradable. Reusable stitch markers, fabric project bags, and digital patterns instead of printed ones all help reduce your crafting footprint.

Even small habits, like turning leftover yarn scraps, and the tails you cut off into stuffing for toys and cushions or composting natural fibre trimmings, can make a difference.

Crafting a Greener Future

Crochet and knitting has always been a craft of care — care for materials, care for the process, and care for the people we make things for. By embracing sustainability, we extend that care to our planet as well.

This month, take a moment to look at your yarn stash, your tools, and your projects, and ask, “How can I crochet a little more

consciously?” Every mindful choice, no matter how small, helps create a future that’s as beautiful and enduring as the pieces we make.

To help you start your eco-journey try this pattern for a Mesh Scrap yarn bottle holder – it’s a lovely way to use up your scrap yarn!
