There’s something deeply special about making items for a new baby. Whether you’re preparing for your own little one or creating gifts for friends and family, baby projects offer both quick results and lasting meaning.
In a world of mass-produced baby goods, handmade pieces stand apart. A crocheted or knitted blanket becomes a comfort object that travels from cot to toddler bed and beyond. A crocheted or knitted cardigan carries the warmth of the maker’s hands. These aren’t just practical items; they’re heirlooms in the making.
Baby projects also work up relatively quickly compared to adult garments, making them perfect for gift-giving or testing new techniques. Many charity organisations benefit greatly from baby items.

A baby blanket is often the first project people reach for, and with good reason. They’re practical and portable to work on, and you can choose your complexity level. Simple granny squares in soft pastels create timeless blankets perfect for pram outings. Delicate shell stitches or ripple patterns add visual interest without bulk.
The key is choosing a size that’s genuinely useful. Aim for approximately 75cm x 90cm – large enough to be useful but manageable for tiny hands to drag around later.
Crocheted and knitted baby clothes combine adorable aesthetics with genuine practicality. Cardigans are particularly useful, as they’re easier to get on and off than pullovers, and babies can wear them over onesies. Simple booties keep tiny feet warm. Bonnets make charming photo props and special occasion pieces.
When making baby clothing, consider construction carefully. Button closures make dressing easier. Avoid too many seams that might irritate delicate skin. Keep embellishments minimal – buttons should be sewn on very securely, and avoid anything small enough to be a choking hazard.
Handmade nursery items encompass decorative items – bunting or wall hangings, practical – such as bibs and bottle holders and baskets, or playful – mobiles and toys.
Choosing the Right YarnBaby yarn needs to tick several boxes: soft against sensitive skin; machine washable (new parents don’t have the time nor want to hand-wash); and durable enough to survive frequent laundering. We stock a range of yarns specifically suited to baby projects that meet all these requirements. A popular choice for baby items is our Fiddlesticks Superb 8 or Superb 4 non-pilling acrylic yarn.
Cotton yarns work beautifully for summer items and are naturally hypoallergenic, while soft acrylic blends offer warmth for winter garments and stand up brilliantly to repeated washing.
While wool is warm and a natural fibre, it often creates irritation on baby’s sensitive skin. In fact many charity organisation won’t take woolen garments, and prefer acrylic for this reason.
When crafting for babies, safety must come first. Avoid long ribbons or ties that could pose strangulation risks. If making toys, ensure eyes and noses are embroidered rather than attached buttons or beads. Check that your stitches are tight enough that little fingers can’t get caught. Always include care instructions with your finished item.
