Crochet Extra – October 2020

The School holidays are almost over here in Queensland. I managed to sneak a few days away with my son and Sarah spent a few days off with her daughters while Kathie and Sharon kept the wheels turning here at Crochet Australia.  We’ve also now painted our letterbox the same colour as the shop – so we are now even easier to find!

Did you start the new Scheepjes CAL? We have a limited number of the kits in store if you haven’t already got one. While the CAL has started, anyone can join at any time.  This CAL is expected to go through until December.

I was surprised last week when I walked into stores to see Christmas decorations already out for purchase…I really hadn’t thought it was that close – but it is less than 100 days away.  Do keep an eye out in the coming weeks for new items we are expecting from our suppliers regarding Christmas crafting and great Christmas gift ideas.

Our workshops for November and December are a great start – book your spot and learn to crochet some beautiful beaded items (November) or a Crochet hook holder (December).

We are still experiencing delays with shipping, and we can only expect this to get worse between now and Christmas as the volume of packages begin to increase. Please ensure you get in early to allow sufficient shipping time and avoid disappointment.

Join us at our crochet workshops for October and crochet a skirt – for yourself or as a gift.

Theme— Creating with Yarn – Art or Craft?

The beauty of creating with yarn is the ability to use the simplest of stitches and tools to create anything that your imagination desires. Whether this be practical to use in your day-to-day life or an expression of art to add decoration.  Knitting, crochet, tatting and macrame can be both practical and decorative – they are both craft and art. I believe the lines are very blurred, but a great quote I heard is as follows:

To me we are all artists.  The artistic side of our craft is wide ranging – embellishment of our clothing, wallhangings in the home, cushions to cover our lounge, or a crocheted bouquet to decorate the table. But it is not limited to inside – Floor covering for the deck, pot hangers and crocheted gardens, tree, bike and car cosies, crocheted sculptures, and more recently crocheted taxidermy.   See the new Yarn Bookazine for a dinasour taxidermy pattern. The limit is really your imagination. The limit is really your imagination.

Artwork also make for fantastic gifts, and with Christmas creeping up fast this is a great way of gifting from the heart. Cotton is great for art as it is sturdy and gives great stitch definition. But all yarns can be used. Add some sparkle with the metallic yarns, or add texture with mixing yarns. Freeform In particular is one form of expressive yarn art, where all types of medium and techniques can be used.

And the tools are endless – knitting needles, crochet hooks, pom-pom and tassell makers all add an element of interest and are all available at Crochet Australia. Take a look at resources and yarns available in our next section.  Or try your hand at your own art with this free  crochet wall hanging by a Persia Lou.
