How to Begin to Crochet

Crochet Australia is an on-line business specializing in all things crochet.

TO MAKE A LOOP
TO MAKE A LOOP

Step 01

  1. Make a V with two fingers.
  2. With the tail in front of your two fingers, wrap the yarn up and over your fingers, then come down behind them, and back up in front.
  3. Wrap the yarn back over your fingers, crossing it with the yarn already there.

Step 02

  1. With your hook, go between your fingers through the circle that’s been created and catch the working end of the yarn.
  2. Pull the yarn back through your fingers and pull up a loop.
  3. Do not remove the hook from the yarn.

Step 03

  1. Remove your fingers from the circle, and pull the tail and working end of the yarn together to tighten the circle.
  2. Then pull the working end of the yarn to bring the loop smaller to fit onto the hook (do not make it too tight).

Step 04

  1. Measure with your eye about 10cm along the working end of your yarn from the loop on the hook.
  2. At about this point, with the palm of your hand facing up, wind the yarn over your little finger, then behind your ring finger over the next finger then behind your pointer finger.

Step 05

  1. With your thumb and middle finger, gently hold the knot under the loop on your hook.
  2. Keep your pointer finger straight to hold the yarn away from your hook
CHAIN (ch)
CHAIN (ch)

Step 06

CHAIN (ch) is the basis of all crocheting. The chain is used to begin crocheting, to obtain height at the beginning of a row, and in patterns where an opening or a hole is required. When crocheting the starting row (foundation chain), work the chain stitches more loosely than the following rows.

  1. Pass the hook under the yarn and back over it – called a ‘yarn over hook.’ or abbreviated as YOH
  2. Draw the yarn through the loop on the hook. This makes one chain (ch). The loop on the hook is not counted as a stitch.

Step 07

  1. Repeat Step 6 until you have as many chain (ch) as you need – one loop always remains on the hook.
  2. 2. Always keep the thumb and the forefinger of the left hand near the stitch on which you are working.
  3. 3. Practise making chain stitches until they are even in size.
