Description

By Mary Maynard. Enjoy the tales of tatting of the times past and the story of Amelda Scott, who tatted all her long life and never used a pattern to create her masterpieces. This inspired the author to produce a book, where by using a simple ring, chain and picots, you could make the 4 square ring and then like patchwork join the piece you have created together and make doilies, afghans, garments etc. We are shown the secret to create round doilies using interlocking increases, diamond round doily, spiral pinwheel, even hexagons can be achieved from the 4 square formula, hexagons that have been pieced together as you would in crochet, colourful granny squares pieced together to form an afghan and even the ripple and the oblong can be achieved. There is an amazing log cabin worked in shades of blue. This is stunning. The author then proceeds to discuss the concept of how she achieved such beautiful designs from this simple process and how to plan the piece and deal with loose ends. We are then led into some more elaborate looking pieces – triple rail fence, flower garden doily which has been inspired by crochet, lovers knot doily and square motifs that are definitely different. She has also achieved silhouette tatting using the 4 square ring method. All this is visual and without patterns. However there is a written pattern included for an oval doily as it does not use the secret formula and instructions are required. So if you can tat and would like to try something different, your edges and motifs could take on a whole new twist. Great colourful pictures throughout. 54 pages.
